Literary Pumpkins

 Literary Pumpkin Assignment

To celebrate the beginning of fall and our love of reading, we will be creating Literary Pumpkins. The pumpkins are going to represent their favourite characters, in their favourite books. The project is easiest to do if students choose a main character, as there is a lot of information provided about the character. The decoration of the pumpkins will take place at home. Here are some guidelines to help you create your literary pumpkins:

  • Real pumpkins are to be painted or decorated with markers, NOT carved. NO HOLE PUNCHES -- PINS OR STAPLES, ETC. Real pumpkins begin to deteriorate immediately if they are punctured. Pumpkins must be no larger than a basketball. Artificial pumpkins are acceptable.

  • Acrylic paints or permanent markers work best. Watercolors tend to run. Yarn, construction paper, pipe cleaners, etc. may be used to decorate the pumpkins. Paste, glue or hot glue may also be used.

  • Carved pumpkins will not be accepted. Please include the name of the book and the book character the pumpkin represents. Students are encouraged to display the book they are illustrating along with their entry. Please make sure names are inside personal books.

There will also be an oral component to the assignment. The students will write a paragraph about their characters, to be presented orally to the class. The paragraph needs to be written in French. The paragraph should talk about the character they chose. Who is it? What book is he/she from? Why did they pick this character? What are some of the character’s traits? Please practice their oral presentation of their pumpkins at home. Things to focus on: projection of their voice, and speaking clearly.

Due Date: Friday, October 30th

*The pumpkins can be dropped off early, the week of October 26th. The pumpkins must be brought home/picked up no later than Monday, November 6.

Dear parents and guardians,

Our music class is planning to build some musical instruments.

Each child will choose a musical instrument that he or she will build at school. Brass and Woodwind instruments will be omitted this year.

When he/she has chosen his/her musical instrument, he/she will be able to build it. Please have your child buy or find the required materials.

They have one week from today to bring the material to school.

(Friday, October 10,  2020).

Thank you so much for your help and stay safe.

Google Classroom

Please sign up for Google Classroom, as online learning will begin Monday.

To sign into Google Classroom, the students have all received a mytools2go account. Here is how the students sign into mytools2go. Lessons, and assignments will be assigned in the Google Classroom, and the assignments will be turned in using Google Classroom. Here is a message from Sean Clements on how to log into Google Classroom. The Class Code is vp5n3ys.

Message from Sean Clements:
Hi Renee,
Yes, they do need mytools2go accounts and they do have accounts already.  They do not have gmail, however, so the need to login at classroom.google.com or drive.google.com.  If they try to log in at gmail.com it will fail.

The default password is their birthday in the format mmddyyyy and the username is firstname.lastname@mytools2go.ca (note the '.' between first and last name)

Number Talk

What is a Number Talk?
Number Talks are short (10ish minutes), exercises aimed at building number sense. Number sense is the ability to play with numbers meaning students can visualize problem solving, perform calculations quickly, and are flexible in their mathematical strategy.

I'm looking for the students to solve the equations, 3 different ways (if possible), with the use of the strategies we have discussed in class.

Some Math and P.E.

One of the games the students love to play in Math Class is War. You will need a deck of cards to play this game. Ensure that all Joker cards have been removed from the deck. Divide the desk equally between 2 players. Each card has a value, represented by the number on the card. The values for the Jack, Queen, and King are: 11, 12, and 13. Aces are 1. Each player draws 2 cards. They then add the values of the cards to see who has the greater value. The player with the higher value wins the cards. The game is done when someone loses all their cards.

On Wednesdays, we have Gym class. The students like doing Cosmic Yoga. Here is a video that the kids can follow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NWzS2xziI4

Update

I hope that you are all doing well. As we learned yesterday, schools have been closed until May 4, with the possibility of them being closed even longer. The Minister of Education has implemented new measures to school closure expectations.

I am encouraging everyone to set up their child(ren)’s mytools2go accounts and sign into our Google Classroom. This is where assignments will be posted. This is also where assignments will be submitted to me for formative evaluation\feedback.

Non-standard Units of Measurement

The following videos will help explain the standard and non-standard units of measurement:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8o7n-A0SC0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0p2RD0VnR0

Measure 3 objects in your house using non-standard units of measurement. The easiest things to use are pencils, erasers, and paper clips. Before measuring your objects, estimate how long (how many pencils) it will be.

Play a Game

This is another fun game for beginners that requires very few pieces of equipment.
The name itself means "Who/What Am I?" and the goal is to guess what you are.
Together, create cards with familiar words. These words can be a name/an animal/an object/a profession/other categories. Examples: un chien, un enseignant, une maison, un bébé, etc...Shuffle the cards, and place in a pile. Each person will then choose a card.
Everybody, then, sticks the card on their forehead, WITHOUT knowing what's written on it. Now, whatever the card says, it becomes who the person is. And the goal is to find out what's on it by asking questions.
Examples of the questions:
  • Est-ce que je suis un ĂŞtre humain? (Am I a human being?)
  • Est-ce que je suis bien connu? (Am I famous?)
  • Est-ce que je suis un outil pour fabriquer quelque chose? (Am I tool to make something?)
  • Est-ce que je suis un appareil pour Ă©couter de la musique? (Am I a device to listen to the music?)
Based on the answers, you can start guessing what's written on the card. The first person to guess right wins.
This game is also often called "Devine TĂŞte" or Guess Your Head.

Art Lesson

We usually have an art lesson on Thursdays, so I thought it would be a nice way to end the week. Before March break, the students started an art project involving flowers. I thought this tutorial would be a fun little activity to continue/complete that art project. Use whatever art supplies you have handy. Have fun drawing.

Important Information

As per the Board's direction, I will be moving to Google Classroom to post classroom learning. The focus will include Literacy, Numeracy, and Religion.

I am new to this platform, so it will be a learning process for us all. The students' mytools2go accounts have been activated so that they are able to access Google Classroom. I will include a message from our IT person as to how to access their accounts. The Class Code is vp5n3ys. From my understanding, you will need this code to find the classroom.

Message from Sean Clements:

There is a scavenger hunt for you to do while on a nature walk. It's called, Chase au trésor de printemp.

Updates

We have not received any news as to what is happening yet. When we do, I will update you all.

Continue with LALM. MATH TALK-Talk about the difference between standard and non-standard units of measurement. Remind them that we used standard and non-standard units of measurement when we were learning about time. Do they think pencils, paperclips, and erasers would be standard or non-standard units of measurement, why?

Bonjour!

I'm just sending out a message to wish you all well. I hope that you had a nice March Break with your families. Continue doing your LALM this week and next, I provided the students with 2 books, one for each week.

As I get information, I will notify you on the blog.

Here's a message from the government:

As a first step to ensure the continued learning of your children, our government has launched an online portal dedicated to curating and providing access to a wide variety of educational resources, for all students from Kindergarten through to Grade 12.

This online portal, which is available at Ontario.ca/learnathome, enables students at every grade level to continue learning while away from school. These resources are developed by Ontario educators, and resources for all grades are informed by leading instructional guidance. For those students who are in secondary school, we are providing access to online courses directly based on Ontario curricula.
