Science Units are Coming to an End

We have had a lot of fun learning about forces in this unit. The students in grade 4 have learned about pulleys and gears, and the advantages of simple machines. The grade 5 students have built bridges and egg protectors testing forces on different structures. The grade 6 students have learned characteristics of airplanes that allow a stable flight. It was nice to see them be active while learning.

Our science units are quickly coming to an end. All of these units will be finished on Friday. The grade 4 students will be doing an in-class individual assignment where they will display what they have learned about pulleys and gears. They will have to identify each in a picture of everyday objects. The grade 5 students have had a couple big projects, so they will not have a summative assessment this unit. The grade 6 students might have a brief quiz.

Each grade will begin their new Science units on Monday of next week.

Grade 5- Egg Protectors

The grade five students did an amazing job on their bridges last week. Rubrics will be sent home in the next couple of days for parent signature.
The grade 5 engineers will have another project this week. They will be designing and creating egg protectors. Their egg protector must protect the egg from cracking when dropped from 2m up. They are due on February 20th. They will have this week in class to work on them. They also need to figure out how much it would cost to fabricate their invention, and make an advertisement, either television or radio, to sell it. I look forward to what they come up with!

Grade 5- Bridges

We tested our bridges yesterday. The students did a fantastic job building them. Each was capable of holding 1000g of weight. A couple of them were strong enough to hold 1520g. It was fun to see your little engineers at work. It was exciting to hear them talk about what would make a stable bridge as they were building.

Pulleys and Bridges.

We are having some fun in grade 4 and 5 today. We are doing some experiments in class to reinforce what we have learned about pulleys and bridges. The grade 4 students are doing their experiments to see the difference between fixed pulleys and mobile pulleys. The grade 5 students are putting their engineering abilities to work to see who can build the strongest bridge. It was great being able to walk around the classrooms and hear them using their scientific vocabulary to explain what they were experiencing.
